Does anyone know how will this effect us as FreeBSD users and will this delay the future release of version 4.3 that was scheduled sometime this month?
My Compa was just at Walnut Creek. He said that it is busniss as usual, infact he came back with a copy of 4.3 realese. As far as we know wind river plans to support freebsd even more than bsdi did.
Thanks

Their abrupt and completely unannounced drop of the Slackware Linux project has me questioning their true intent of OpenSource projects (namely FreeBSD). FreeBSD is a better OS than any Linux, but since the big boys (IBM, Compaq, Adobe, etc) are jumping on the Linux bandwagon and releasing software tools compiled specifically for the Linux kernel, many of us still need to run Linux on a few of our servers. Since Rycamor told me about Slackware, I have loved this version of Linux. It is the most Unix like Linux that I have used and I am very sad and disappointed in Wind River's decision to not support the project anymore..... I also think it was very rude and unprofessional of them to drop the project and not inform anyone about it.
I truely hope that they are honestly committted to supporting FreeBSD in the OpenSource market. I also hope that they realize the problems that are starting to appear with the size of the Linux movement and hopefully either beef-up the Linux compatibility of FreeBSD or work with the "big boys" on getting us the same tool kits compiled for FreeBSD
I was also quite saddened by that sudden action. If you browse the Devel forum at Slackware, you will see the amount of disruption it has caused in the lives of the Slackware developers.
That's an example of a traditional-style corporation "not quite getting it" about the purpose of open source work. I'm sure they just automatically assumed that enything that would strengthen Slackware would weaken FreeBSD, since the two are in "competition".
If they kept both and managed to really work on the interoperability, then they would have two truly stronger products.
Some of my fears are starting to show up. Since the 4.3 release (comming up on three weeks now), FreeBSD has had non-stop ISP problems greating effecting their distribution to their mirrors and CVS sites.
It's a shame. Of course, let's all plot the value of Wind River's stock for the next couple years. My bet is that this company will fall into obscurity rapidly.
