WinCVS executing the Flamenco of Death - universal "no such user"

I was doing some basic work in the CVSROOT password file, changing a user from one user group to another, and I seem to have induced a total shutdown. Regardless of the action intitated, or the user initiating the action, WinCVS returns a status message of:

"Fatal error, aborting.
cvs [update aborted]: cvs
: no such user"

I went back in through the server and backed out the change to the password file, but no change in behavior.

Any ideas?
