I'm running RedHat ES 2.4.9-e.12smp. I've noticed that memory is slowly disappearing. I've found a process [tt]winbindd[/tt] that seems to be eating it all up. Does anyone know what this is and why it might be using so much memory? Also, is there a way to free it up without rebooting?

Here's some output from [tt]top[/tt]...
Code:
PID USER PRI NI SIZE RSS SHARE STAT %CPU %MEM TIME COMMAND
 1040 root 15 0 2562M 1.7G 676 S 0.0 56.0 1:34 winbindd
Any help would be appreciated.

My guess is that's a convenience service run to help windows users leverage dynamic DNS through your server as a domain controller... I suppose googling would be more definitive.

Frankly, if you don't know what it is and you are root/admin responsible, then shut it down and wait for someone to complain. No sense making other processes suffer.

winbindd only needs to be ran if you are joined to a Windows Domain. Winbindd imports users and groups from the domain to the linux server. You must be joined to a domain. It has nothing to do with DNS.

If you have questions, post the to the Samba list. winbindd is a part of samba.
