I just upgraded an old computer from win95 to win98 and the Harddrive died. It is a personal built computer with 233Mhz, 2gigs, 64Mb RAM. After the upgrade installed it tried to reboot itself and it died. Now the harddrive grunts and nothing comes up on the Moniter. No text or BIOS information, nothing at all. Just blackness and the harddrive grunting while the CDROM led stays lit in solid color. I tried putting a Floppy for it to read or a CD in the drive but nothing worked. I think my HD failed but I am not sure because I thought even if it did fail the BIOS should come on the screen and a Invalid Disk Error Msg should appear.

Clear the CMOS (usually a case of swopping a jumper from one pair of pins to another for a few seconds, this is nearly always situated next to your motherboards battery)
If it boots go straight into bios setup and set to default settings.
Then try unplugging and reseating all leads, cards and plugs including the ram.
If you still have no joy run the motherboard with just the power supply, processor, ram and display card connected.
hopefully you should be getting somewhere by now? reconnect cards etc one by one to pinpoint the fault!
Thats enough for now. Martin
