i reciently purchased a cable/dsl router for my two computers to share a future cable connection.

I set everything up correctly, I have activity on all NIC's and the router (LEDs light up and blink when activity is present). Both computers see and share files without a problem. One computer see's the router (ping and web browser). The other does not. I've tried reinstalling (and uninstalling) the NIC card and all protocals. I've tried resrtting the router and switching ports.

not sure what else to do

Using DHCP? If not, are you using IP addresses & subnets that make sense?

If yes to DHCP, is the machine getting an IP address? If not, try setting its IP manually and then ping the router.

Report back, and we'll figure it out.

I have tried both DHCP and manually setting the IP address and gateway, but still can not ping the router. Actually I can't even ping the other computer. But I can share files.

Ok. I removed ALL networking components including removing hardware. Then I only installed the NIC card. Then TCP/IP protocal, etc. I rebooted after each install. Then I pinged the router... SUCCESS. I ran WINIPCFG and saw all the right settings. Yea!

But.. Then I reinstalled the modem, Drivers went in fine, but couldn't get connected to the net. I was missing PPP. I tried to install it through Networking, but it didn't give me the option. Uninstalled dial-up-networking and reinstalled it. It still didn't work. So in a last ditch effort, I ran windows setup. 30 minutes laterand I'm back on the net.

Now to call the cable company and order broadband.
