WIN98SE will work fine...will connect to different ISP's and browse successfully, it's on a small network and has it's own dial up modem. Problem: After a few hours of not being connected and then try to connect it will connect...and logon...but only IP address will go out via the modem. Therefore if I type in fails(green monitors not flashing...so too does the ping fail. but if I type in works great and you can see the lights flashing on the green monitors. Route print yields same result for both failure and successfull connections. I've tried with DNS entries and without both in network and in dial up networking tcp/ip settings. Only TCP is ticked...no extra stuff is used...IE netbui.. ipx.. wins... If I do a shut down works and start up again...everything works great again. If I only turn off modem...it will not fix problem. It appears the tcp/ip gets corrupt and fails to recognise new DNS settings via modem. Any suggestions...better yet...any answers? Thanks for anything.

OK, when you dial up, run the following command(It's undocumented under windows)

Start->run->
winipcfg

This will print your IP config. Select your adapter (The dial-up one) and you can view details. This will show you what your IP addr is, your gateway and your DNS servers. There are 2 scenarios for what your DNS should be:

1. THey are static, and you enter them in the network negiborrhood properties for hte adapter.

2. They are assigned via DHCP, which means when you dial-up, you get assigned an IP address, a gateway, and DNS server(s).

When in the winipcfg window, you can release all and renew all to re-assert your addresses. I don't reallly know what could be wrong, but this could assist your troubleshooting.

Also, with Windows (I used to be a tech) you sometimes have to go into the network properites, and remove all of hte adapters, the tcp/ip and everything, and re-install it. I think some registriy settings or files get corrupted, and need to be re-copied. I would try that also and see if it helps.

Good Luck!

MWB. As always, I hope that helped!
