Win98 SE Re-install - Problem with Internet Connection

Due to a virus attack a number of things on my PC started behaving badly. Using Norton I got rid of the Virus but I have problems with various things so I decided to re-install WIN98 SE.

In order to - hopefully - keep my existing set-up and not have to re-install every darn program, I didn't clear my WIndows directory first. I just started the PC using WIN98 Startup Disk and ran set-up from the CD.

EVerything appeared to come up fine - thats difficult to belive for a start - and I thought I had achieved a miracle.

BUT when I used Dial Up Networking I found the problem. The modem works fine and I can dial up either one of my two ISP's and connect. But IE or Netscape Navigator wont find any sites complaining of the need for a DNS Server IP Address. Neither of my ISP's require the use to define Primary or Secondary DNS IP Addresses so I don't put them in.

I have uninstalled and re-installed DUN. I have tried to uninstall IE 5.5 but I can't and I Can't grt repair to work. It wants to lokk for some files on the Internet but I can't connect.

Is there another way to solve this rather than to FDISK C Drive and start again? I have two Hard Disks so is there a way to preserve my existing programs - Office, Games etc. etc - which all work fine>

Your help - no ANY Help - woud be greatly appreciated.

I am having exactly this problem with a laptop and cannot begin to know why. However, nothing is asking for addresses. The modem connects and logs on to the isp or the company server, then nothing, not another bit goes out over the modem, nothing is ever found, no error messages. I'm almost suicidal over this.

May I suggest you one thing, If I am right i think you are not yet done with your virus. It may still reside in your system.

Can you try one thing. Go to the following URL

http://www.antivirus.com/pc-cillin/support/edisks.htm

In that page You can use the "Rescue_disk_builder.Exe" link and create the floppies and then try booting with the diskettes. Let me know the result whether it catches any virus.

I eventually solved the problem. I deleted my most of the directories in my windows directory and removed using Install/Uninstall all of the Communications Section.

I rebooted from a Windows 98 Startup disk and rsn setup from there. This time it put everything back correctly.
