Hi

My Win98 system prompt out blue screen message:

" VFat device initialization wizard,
A device or resource required by Vfat is not present or is unavailable. Vfat cannot continue loading. System Halt."

Then I decided to reinstall Win98. Everything seems to be ok during the reinstall process except until the stage of Hardware detecting, it suddently prompt out the blue screen msg:" Fatal Error 0D has occured at 0028:C1488F97. The current application will be terminated"

Since then no matter how I restart the machine, the system try to complete the win98 installation process starting from the 'hardware detectng stage' and the Fatal error will come.

Finally I give up the reinstallation and decide to format the entire hard disk. But before doing so I would like to backup my files which previously located on my Desktop and My Documents folder.

I have a second spare harddisk (I call it as hd02) which also running on Win98 OS to be used in order to backup my neccessary file and folders from the first harddisk. HOWEVER,I cannot find the files and folder since the reinstallation hang. I am able to find 'My Document' folder but without my files; and I coundn't find the 'DESKTOP' folder and its subfolders at all.

Does anyone can help me on this matter ? how can I retrive back my files and folders ? Is there anyway to rollback the registry or anyway in order restore the previous system settings ?

Thanks in Advance.

regards.

Good luck! See:

You could try a registry restore but I don't know if it'll help any. But here's how:

Start your computer and keep tapping the F8 key, and then using the arrow keys choose Safe Mode Command Prompt Only from the Windows 98 Startup menu and press ENTER. At the MS-DOS prompt, type cd\windows\command and then press ENTER. At the C: prompt type scanreg /restore and then press ENTER. There's a space between the g and /. Then select a registry dated the day before the problem started and then press ENTER. NOTE: A properly working registry has the word "Started" next to the date. When you receive notification that you restored a properly working registry, press ENTER to restart your computer.
