I have just installed a new Western Digital Harddrive 80GB on my Sony Vaio computer. Drive is partitioned 40/20/20. I now need to install operating system. When I boot using Win98 Startupdisk I can access the CDROM but the 3 partitions are not found hance when I try to run setup it fails.

When I boot from the harddrive. All parttions are found correctly but now I cannot access the CDROM.

Can anyone help how I can get around this problem so I can install teh operating system

Is all OK in BIOS. If you are loading from a CDRom, you should be changing the read sequence (in BIOS) to something like D,A,C something. This way your D drive or hopefully CDRom drive will be read first, After that it's basically a cinche.

let me know how you get on. Press any key... no, No, NO!! Not THAT one!

If you diagree with the advice I give, please send an email with the word RESIGNATION as the subject.

It sounds like you used WDigital installation disk to prep the drive and have installed a drive overlay.

If so, you must set your BIOS to boot to C, wait for a prompt during boot: "Press any key to boot from floppy disk" (or something like it). Press whatever it says and boot your Win98 floppy to wake up your ROM.

*NOTE* If this is TRUE, it would be best to remove the overlay- providing that your MB can see the drive naturally.
