Ok, Heres the situation: Old HP 466Celeron,dualbooting Win98/Linux on sep drives. Reading that "disabling"my onboard video (Intel810crap) and installing simple PCI video card would help increase my CPU performance-I attempted it. Followed advice on HP site to "add video card",removing the Intel810's hardware profile, installing standard vid display driver, then disabling it>Per instructions I put the new card, ATI expert128, in PCI slot1. Black Screen. Wont work. Cant get the INTEL 810 drivers back.Stuck with 16bit color and crappy graphics now from standard video driver. 1.How can I "disable onboard graphics"from this mobo,I dont know what to look for. And/or how can I get my old one to work again ,until I figure out #1? Apparnetly the new PCI card will not work at all until I can completely undo this builtin video thing.
Thanks for any ideas...TonyH

Found on another newsgroup:
[[ You can disable the video on any Intel 810 motherboard by changing this option in the BIOS, "Init Display First" (under Integrated Peripherals) to "PCI Slot" instead of
"Onboard." This makes the board check for a PCI display adapter before going with the 810's onboard video... ]]
I hope it works!

Thks for reply-I have tried, everything shy of a hammer onthis stubborn muleheaded bios setup. It (under advanced) gives the listing "Video boot type" -- 'ONBOARD VIDEO', when i hit ENTER on that-the only 2 options I get are 1MB mem or 512k memory allocated-EVEN THOUGH,ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE DISPLAY IT SAYS SELECT NONE FOR DISABLING ONBOARD VIDEO!! You cant enter zero, none or delete either of those 2. I have to say it cant be done using bios, and I searched HP's site 2hrs reading
documents about all kinds of boards and stuff.Never found mention of my exact model , Pavilion 8543C. And linux looks so good on it lol. Guess I'll prepare to reload Win98 so I can get my orig video drivers back on it. Im defeated, and my head hurts. Appreciate the try.

If you're really serious about wanting more outta' this model T (no slam, just having a little fun at your expense)
start again from scratch.
Get yourself some imaging software and pop in another drive and back them up...then start from scratch with the install of the hardware from the get-go and THEN worry about getting the OS to play right.
Furthermore, don't hit enter when in the BIOS, hit F1 and it should pop a dialog box. As for the motherboard...pop open the case and get a flashlight and write down every number that even resembles an FCC ID number...then track them down with google and find out what motherboard it is...and you'll prolly find out what model it is, too.
There also has to be a serial number on the back or somewhere...a search engine may even track that down.
There has to be a BIOS revision for this old a machine...what's HP say about that?
And I don't wanta' burst your bubble or anything but the last time I read that I could put in a PCI video card and have better video and believed it I acquired a PCI video card that's still over there on the shelf doing what it does best. Nothing much for the video.

OK -- PUBLIC POST -- I AM A COMPUTER DUMMY
After much wailing and gnashing of teeth, I figured it
all out. So I guess they didnt print it in BIG enough letters for me, You gotta plug the little monitor cable into the connecter on the back of the new card,in order for it to show you video. Big laugh on me. Looks good now though, and I think it did speed up my dinosaur. Well I never replaced a video card before lol. Always look for the simplest explanations, right? Thanks to gargouille, thats why he's n management.
PS-never did find the name of that crazy motherboard ...
