Win98 Client Logs Off Involuntarily?

Please help. Here's the scenario: a Win98 Dell laptop using a docking station connects first to a Novell network and then to a Windows NT 4.0 server. The printers and mail are on the NT server. The connection is all DHCP.

The initial login takes several minutes (the Novell server is thousands of miles away) but everything connects great. However, after about an hour or so, the user is disconnected involuntarily from the NT server. The event viewer on the NT server shows Event ID 538.

This just started happening a few days ago. It's been working great up until now. Any ideas? I'm going freaking crazy.

Hello,

The event id is used to identify a successful log off event.
Do you have any security settings on your NT servers that would disconnect a user due to in-activity, or anything of the sort?

Unfortunately, no, there are no security settings set to do anything like that. I checked that right away. If it helps, it seems to happen when he tries to print. Or at least that's when he notices that he's been disconnected. His network printers appear all grayed out too. This is really a tough one. Thanks for your response.

Try deleting his user account and add it back (Don't delete his email account, just his account in UserManager). See if this helps.
