Hi guys, i have an old pentium1 200mhz(my first com) and i want to install win98 on it (win95 was on it before) i formated the drive, started to install win98 but ??no mouse detection??? what's the possible reason or reasons???

Everytime i boot a screen shows up to say there's no mouse attached???

I tried to detected it several times, the only time it worked the mouse never showed up in the device manager????

So i reinstalled but still not detecting it....

The board is an Intel 430 TX

Thanks in advance....(i wanted to give it to my niece for x-mas but it's getting late to do so, hahaha)

What sort of mouse is it? PS2 or Serial?

Perhaps the connections have come loose inside the machine -- this is quite common on machines with a serial mouse, where the port's connection to the case has lost a screw. and fallen inside.

I'd suggest a quick investigation inside the case to check for any loose cables/interface cards.

No, i already checked all connections.

Thanks anyway Rhort Have Fun...

The first place to start with these sort of problems is usually to try a different mouse -- that way you know if the problem is with the pointing device or the board, port, OS, etc... so my first recommendation would be to go out and get a really cheap mouse and try it out. If it works, then you know you need to replace the mouse. If it doesn't work, then you know you have other issues.

This error is most common with PS/2 mice. Is that the sort of mouse you're using? If so, you should check to make sure that there are no errors in the device manager related to the PS/2 ports.

The error can also occur, however, with serial mice -- they can be incorrectly detected by Windows as external modems, fax devices, or additional floppy drives. In this case, you'll want to check for extraneous hardware like that in the device manager.

Let us know how your testing turns out. And if you have need of further assistance letting us know if it's a PS/2 or serial mouse would be most helpful!

Ok my mistake, i forgot to say that i tried 3 dif mouse(serial and PS2)

I know it's not the mouse.

Thanks anyway

Just out of curiousity, have you gone into safe mode to see if you have any ghost mouse drivers? While you are in there, if you are using a serial mouse, delete all the com ports and when you restart, check the bios for com ports being enabled. Also, could try reinstalling win 95 (shudder) and see if the mouse is suddenly found.
good luck. hg

Sorry, still not clear. Your last message suggests that you're having this same problem with both serial and PS/2 mice???

If so, then you're probably looking at either a ghost pointer device as suggested above or possibly a corrupted installation of the OS.

If that wasn't what you meant to say, then have you looked in the device manager for the things I suggested in my previous message to you?
