I have Win98 on the slave and Wxp on the master, I want to have the dual boot screen appear so I can choose which OS to boot from, how can I do this. At the moment it will only boot from the OS designated in the BIOS.

rowbeeone,

It sounds like you installed Windows 98 AFTER Windows XP...but I could be wrong - at any rate, try this:

Boot into Windows 98, and then rerun your XP setup from Windows 98, choosing to do a "Clean Install", and selecting to "Repair a current installation" after the first reboot into DOS mode setup. When the proper screen comes up, be sure to select the c drive for the install, since it seems that is where you installed XP the first time. Windows XP will detect that you already have an additional OS, and will create a dual boot screen for you. You won't have to actually reinstall XP, you'll just be running a "repair" mode, which should accomplish the dual boot screen nicely.

Let Me Know!

uhh, all thats fine, prescot9.

but there is one tiny problem for me.

i believe i have the same problem as rowbeeone, and i dont have a winXP cd. the software package taht comes with my notebook does not have it. BLEAGH.

so now i have to configure active partition everytime i want to toggle between the two operating system (win XP and win 98).

-=Steps i have taken so far=-

format a primary dos partition in my hard disk drive.

set this primary dos partition to active and began win98 installation via win98 bootup disk.

upon completing installing win98, i set the partition with winXP to active again, and restarted my notebook.

WinXP loaded, and there is no dualboot option.

Were you given an OEM version of XP on CD, or do you just have a restore disk for the laptop?

If you don't have the CD, then most likely you won't have the option to reconfigure this system as "dual-boot" without using 3rd-party software. XP must write to the primary partition's boot sector after Win98 has been installed. Aside from 3rd-party software, I know of no way around this.

Look for something like BootMagic...
