Win95 client backup speed drops off dramatically

We have a Windows95 client which gets backed up by Seagate Backup Exec nightly. The throughput on the backup job starts at about 35 MB/min, then stays between 34 - 40 MB/min for the first 18 minutes of the job. After 18 minutes the speed drops in about 6 minutes to about 18 - 20 Mb/min for the rest of the job. What could be causing this? The jobs on the other NT workstations and Nt servers do not have this speed drop - off problem. Thanks.

Just off the top of my head there can be several explainations. First, are you doing compression, either software or hardware? BE could be slowing down when it or the device start doing compression.

Another possibilty is network traffic. I'm assumming that this is a scheduled backup. Is there some heavy traffic change during this time?

Finally, BE may start slowing down when it has to search for data on the harddrive. If the harddrive is heavily fragmented, BE has to search more thus slowing down the throughput. This is the most likely possiblity to my small mind. I believe that BE looks at the FAT for files, then backs up all data for that file before moving to the next file.

It could also be any combination of these (or others).

These are just a few possiblities. If this is not a major problem, I wouldn't worry about it.

James P.
