System state can't be backed up from remote machine. If I back up the system state to a local file and then back this file up to tape on a remote machine can the process be reversed? Restore the system backup file to disk across the netwok and then restore the system state?

Yes you could run the system state backup to a file on a remote share then have this backup to tape, when you need to restore it from tape and use NTbackup to restore from the file.

What software are you using to backup the server remotely? If it doesn't support backing up open files and the registry you might be advised to backup the whole of C: to a file using NTBackuk.

This is only a suggestion but it might be better to backup to a file on a remote share then back that up to tape as you will be able to take advantage of shadow copies for open files and all the system files and system state will be in the same backup. I'm not sure how well NTBackup will work for restoring a system if it was backed up over the network without an agent.

Cheers. It will be using shadow copy if I back up the system state to a local file on the same server and then back this up onto tape across the network so should be okay. Thanks!
