A user complained that his system was rebooting every time he tried to connect to a VPN through the Nortel Contivity VPN Client. I checked it out, and sure enough, the system does a VERY HARD reboot. You click connect... and before you know it, you're looking at the POST test.

I couldn't figure out what to do, so I even went as far as started building a new system for him. Now, on the new system, I'm having the exact same problem. I really just can't believe this. This is a completely different computer, and a BRAND NEW install of Windows 2000 Professional.

I've seen other threads where people complained about this problem, but nobody responded to their threads. This IS happening to other people, so I figured I'd start a thread dedicated to this issue.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Thanks
Ian

I have a (dim) recollection of a similar problem, on a Dell PC. In this case the BIOS was accepting a reset from the comms and interpreting this as a reset for the PC. Check your PC manufacturer for a BIOS upgrade.

Also what version of the client is being used?
If the user has a 2.6x version, have them upgrade the client.

The client is version 4.15, I believe. I have seen other threads about this, but nobody seems to have any idea what the problem could be. I don't understand why the BIOS would have anything to do with it, though, because this all of the sudden started happening on someone's system after I ghosted it.

Pleeease someone help!

I have now confirmed that the computer also spits out a STOP error and reboots when you disconnect from a dialup networking session, or from a windows VPN connection.

Slowly killing myself...

Hi:
Do you have any other VPN clients installed on this machine?
I use a Dell C-800 Lattitude WIN 2K Professional---- no problems.I connect over my home network using a cable modem(also used dial-up ISP).
Check the services running on the machine too.

When in Win2000 system reboots by self, in order to diagnose, you should go in the system properties, startup/recovery and remove the checkmark in the 'automatically reboot on system failure'...
