I have a Windows 2000 server that is refusing to join our existing WinNT domain. I have started from scratch with it about three times not in a vain attempt to get it on the domain. I have done the usual checks ie ensuring that the network card and cable are OK. I have also checked the network point and equipment, all is ok.

When I try to join the domain I get the error:

The following error occurred validating the name "domain name".

The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted.

Any ideas on what I can do to solve this as it is driving me mad! [mad]

Thanks in advance,

Caroline

What results when you run ipconfig /all on both NT and W2K servers.
Can you ping the NT server from the W2K server?

The other thing to try if the IP address is ok is just type in the net bios name

eg "Trog" rahter than "Trog.co.uk"

This works sometimes....

Glad to be of service.
