Hi All

I'm relatively new to W2k (NetWare background - sorry!) so
apologies in advance if I'm asking dumb questions.

I am trying to to set up new users with roaming profiles.
I've read various documentation and all seems to point to
some manual effort every time user created. In particular:

1) The 'default' NTFS rights given to the Profile
directory only seem to allow access to the users
themselves. I want administrators to be able to have full
control of these Profile directories and having to
manually take ownership and then assign rights to Admin
Group every time is a bit of a pain. Is it possible to
automate this process?

2) I also want new user Profiles created based on a
template Profile that I have placed on the Network. What
I've been doing, which is a very manual process, is
assigning a path to the profile directory under User
Properties, profiles tab, something like
\\fileserver\StaffProfilesShare$\%username% and then
manually copying in my template profile. Not very
efficient as you can see. Surely there must be way of
automating this??

I'd really appreciate any help on this. Perhaps someone
could point me to some good documentation that may explain.

Many thanks in advance
Jules

Create global groups and apply policy restricting the number of folders includes in each roaming profile. You can manage groups instead of case by case.

Here is why it’s the way it is: Link:

Hi

Thanks for the reply.

I'm not sure that I understand what you mean though. If I exclude directories in the roaming profile, then all this means is that they won't be copied to profile stored on network. I don't want to do this (yet, anyway). I want to be able to have first-time users pick up a predefined profile that I have created and put on the network already, i.e one that they can use as a starting profile and then modify as they wish. My problem is that I don't want to have to manually copy this to the profile path I specify under each user in Active directory.

If I'm missing the point please let me know.

Any help greatly appreciated
Thanks
Jules

You could use a batch file to create new users (use NET USER or ADDUSERS (if you have resource kit) command) - specifying username (and any other variable names you will use) as parameters. You could include a copy for profile from where its stored to user's profile area - also set up share if necessary.
