Win2K Performance Issue

I appreciate any help you may be able to give us with the following scenario:

We are currently running MF COBOL V3.2.5 under DOS. The server is Netware 3.12. We are trying to port over to WIN2K. We use "MenuWorks" which is all DOS based, to access all the cobol programs. Almost all the files are Indexed.

We have actually moved everything over to the Win2K server and can run all the applications in a NTVDM session when logged on as a user. The problem is that as soon as multiple users run programs, performance slows to a pitiful level. It's still working but extremely slow. In fact we only had 2 users running a program which utilizes a fair amount of I/O. When only 1 user runs the same program on the W2K server, it's 5 times faster than on Netware. Add another user and it goes south immediately. It's twice as fast (probably even faster) on the current Netware version than it is in Win2K, and that doesn't even take into account that there are 30-40 users to still add on to the Win2K server. The Network card is 100 so there's no problem there that we can see.

I am wondering if you have any ideas or might be able to point me in the direction of someone who could help. Obviously we are a bit "outdated" trying to run Cobol Dos apps under Win2K, but nevertheless, until we convert this code, we need to get it up and running as is. Netware no longer supports V3.12 and we absolutely want to move over to Win2K. We currently use NT 4.0 and WIN2K professional to logon onto the Netware server and there are NO PROBLEMS running the programs in a Dos Session under Windows which leads us to believe it's a W2K Server issue. I'd certainly appreciate any suggestions you might be able to come up with. Thanks a lot and take care.

Sincerely,
Conrad Dubois

Well first off Win2K has little support for 16 bit DOS programs under protected mode (Wile Server is in GUI mode). Also W2K Server is a RAM HOG!. The more RAM you have the better. How much RAM are you currently running? Is the network card under the Windows 2000 hardware compatability?
But I think the biggest problem is the 16 bit apps. Unless someone else has a work around you may have to deal with slowness untill you get rid of the 16 bit stuff.
