After installing Adaptec Direct CD software on win2k, I rebooted and the procedure stopped at the "Windows is Starting..." screen. A blue screen appeared with the following text... "STOP: 0x0000001E KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED" Instructions followed about starting up in safe mode and removing software or changing drivers. I did boot up in safe mode and removed the Adaptec Direct CD, this produced no change on restart, so I changed the display adapter(as recommended, again no change on restart. I am prepared to format and reinstall win2k but I hope there is another option.

What is this message about? How can I fix the issue? How can I avoide this in the future? :-I

Thanks, [sig]
Turbo
[/sig]

This error shouldn't happen if you uninstalled it but try to download the latest version of Direct CD for Win2k and install it in safe mode.

Is it safe to install other software in safe mode?

I had a similar situation and I resolved it by using the original W2K CD, booting from the CD, and choosing the "Repair" mode. It took an hour or so, but I didn't lose anything.
