Problems were encountered with several Windows 2000 machines after the Novell Client32 was added or updated. Windows file and printer sharing is also installed on these units, using the IPX protocol.
The symptoms varied from machine to machine, but included immediate 2K crashes when accessing the network, and /or when using a modem through an add-on 8 port serial PCI card. On other machines, trying to use dial-up connections resulted in the modem not being found, or indications of problems writing to memory.
The problem was eventually found to be caused by the Microsoft Netware client being previously installed and not being correctly removed by the installation of the Novell client. The Novell client indicates that it is removing the old client during installation, and appears to work correctly, but the above problems occur and are not corrected by removal/ reinstallation etc. of the network components. This is an acknowledged problem on the Novell forums, but the symptoms described there were not the same experienced here.
The fix is to remove the Novell client completely (see Novell TID 10013922 for help), reboot, reinstall the Microsoft Netware client, reboot, remove the Microsoft Netware client, reboot, then finally install the Novell client. This has worked for every machine that had these strange problems.
Note that the current Novell client is 4.81, and that there are 2 patches required, NT481PT1.EXE, and 282981.EXE.
