Win2k - control panel - software does not open after crash

after crash and hardwarereset i can't open 'software' in the control-panel any more.
perhaps a file broken? i have no idea.
if some1 can gimme a hint how i can fix that (or how i can find the problem) i would be very pleased.

I had almost a simular situation on my 2kpro system at home. Not everything in my control panel was messed up though. I did have problems with going to add/remove programs and going to windowsupdate.microsoft.com. The pages would just come up blank. No error messages or anything. I figured it was an IE problem. I am still not sure what exactly did fix it but here are a few things I did. First I upgraded to IE6 beta. I reinstalled MS virtual machine. Also deleted everything from my windowsupdate folder. I reinstalled IE6 a couple of times during the process. Wish I could remember more of what I did to fix it, but I did so much during those 5 or 6 days. I kept searching MS KB looking for symptoms of each problem I was having until it finally (knock on wood) started working ok again.

hmmm...

i'll try that - but as it only appears with the add/remove programs (not the whole control panel - except the add/remove everything works just fine) i dont think it's a IE problem.

nevertheless i have (to complete the post) IE6 and SP2 already installed and also the windowsupdate works fine.
it is JUST the add/remove that doesnt work (doubleclick on the icon, computer works (shortly, means that the mousepointer turns into the idle-pointer then changes back again) and nothing happens - no error, just as if the program that gets startet does absolutely _nothing_).
I have no other problems with win2k - i can access everything else.

*sigh* i think finally the only solution will be to reinstall win2k _again_ %-(

That is problem I had in control panel. Add/Remove programs would not work. Have you tried to reinstall ms virtual machine? A+ MCP

I think I remember what the problem might have been. I think it was something to do with java or a plugin. Try deleting all of them then reinstall IE. A+ MCP

reinstalling IE6 worked - why does windows depend on a browser so much ?

blame on microsoft....
