I have inherited a Novell 3.12 server in a Windows environment (limited users access the server for a special printer).

The users who connect to the server have been using Windows NT4 workstation and connecting with no problem. When upgrading a machine to Win2K Professional the ability to connect to the server is lost.
Message: "The tree or server cannot be found".

Downloaded and installed "Client v4.83 SP1 for WinNT/2000/XP", but still getting same error.

I have installed client on a fresh NT box and the connection works fine; Also installed on a fresh Win2K machine (laptop) with the same errors.

Selected IPX and am typing the server name.
I can still see the Windows community.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Hi, mdavis

Unfort I have very little experience with Win 2K.

Hwvr, since you have it working under NT, I think you are likely aware of the most common problem areas:

- The service to connect to Netware is running and configured to use IPX/SPX

- You have the client installed

- You have to connect to 3.12 via a bindery connection (there is no NDS, so no login to tree, you log into the server

- You have the right ethernet frame type (default for 3.12 is 802.2, but the server may only support 802.3) If your client is set up with frame type auto it should work.

Question: when you browse the network in Win2K equivalent of Network Neighborhood is there a folder in there for Netware servers? If you double click on the folder do you see the Novell server?

It might be an idea to post this problem also in the Win 2K Pro area - more likely to find Windows gurus there.
