OK, once again I come to you all with hat in hand. I am trying to set up a simple LAN at home between 3 computers. I am running (now) SuSE 7.1 as my server and am trying to get my main box (windoze 2000) to find the network. I think it has - at least partially.
If I ping the server from the Winbox it shows a successful connection. However, I can't get the server to show up on My Network Places. The nic card and the hub show up. I can also open html pages that live on the server from the winbox if I use the IP address (192.168.1.100).
From the server I can use the domain name ( and the page displays.
But if I try this same address from the windows box it tells me it can't find the host.
I figure my problem is in the DNS server (BIND) but I can't find it. Anyone willing to help a new guy out?
Thanks.

Two different problems here.

It's not going to show up in Network Places unless you run Samba on the Linux box.

The naming problem is DNS, but unless you have reason to be more complex, you can just create a hosts file on your Winbox that lists this ip with a name:

192.168.1.100 kirkland

%systemroot%\System32\Drivers\Etc\hosts

Don't confuse that with LMHOSTS - that's for browsing across subnets. Hosts works just like Unix or inux hosts

Thanks Tony. I already had figured out the hosts file thing on both Win & Linux - that allowed me to use the browser and actually display the files off the server onto the Win box. But I didn't realize I needed Samba. I'm looking into it right now.
