I have an NT5 server running MDaemon,Mailscan,Norton AV 2001, no DNS server configured, no DNS IP's in network config, yet still my server makes DNS(53) calls to my router and this makes a dial out to my ISP. I have seen many posts on this subject here but hope that by giving as much detail as possible somebody would know a solution.

I have no Zone records/details setup as I am not really familiar with this, and do not know how to do this.

So, here goes:-

Clients - Win98 with static IP's and ISP DNS IP's added in TCP/IP Network Config details.
Server - NT5 with MDaemon 2.8/Mailscan 2.5j/Norton Anti Virus 2001, I have stopped the DNS server and client, and have not setup any dns records/zones, the server is on a standard LAN with no other servers connected and win98 clients using static IP's. gateway is an ISDN Router with netbios filtering in place (137/138/139/445). I have also disabled Netbios via TCP/IP in case this was anything to do with it.

I hope this is enough info, but if u need more please yell..

Thanks in advance for your help
Marco

let's find out what the exact reason us by splitting it up in 2 things :
- is it application related
- is it service related

1. what happens if you turn off the applciations :mdaemon/mailscan/nav/... all the services that don't belong there

2.
are your clients using the router as default gateway ?
any change they are responsible for it (detach all clients from your router and see what happens if only the server is attached)

set up DNS for a local dns suffix, configure your clients to use the local server for DNS,
set up WINS and configure your clients to use the local server for WINS

set a forwarder to your ISP DNS server in your local DNS server
at this point you can control how name resolution in your network works.... in the past you were relying on broadcasts... which can thrown open your isdn port...
and your clients were pointing to the ISP DNS, which is not good as well...
let them point to your local DNS server, and let your DNS server forward requests that he can't resolve himself to your ISP...
that's the best way to do it ---------------------------------------------------------------------
I have not failed, I've just found 10,000 ways that don't work
