Hi,

I have a windows 2003 domain with 2 windows 2008 servers and I want to add an R2 server into the mix.

I just wanted to check that there are no new considerations to think about.

Many thanks in advance.

They get along just fine, just double check any applications you intend to install on that new server.

HIJACK! can he not upgrade 2008 to the R2 or are these to different fish!

And 2008 and 2008 R2 are completely different OSes. It's not like 2003 and 2003 R2, where you could just install the R2 components on top.

Pat,

There was some discussion to that point last week at a Ranger event in Redmond. MS seems to have a tendency to slap the R2 label on everything these days. Server 2003 R2 isn't the same kind of thing as Server 2008 R2 (relative to the previous iteration), SCCM R2 means yet something else. Marketing is so ridiculous. I miss the good old days of version numbers.

Of course that's a whole other ball of wax these days too.

Hi,

Thanks for all your comments, very much appreciated.

The R2 version does seem different from its predecessor for sure, I am guessing it might share some features with the newly released Windows7?

Again, thanks for taking the time to answer :)

Cheers,

Correct. Windows 2008 R2 was also referred to internally as Windows 7 Server. They're based on roughly the same design and codebase, but obviously they're tweaked pretty heavily for intended use. It's actually the first time since Windows 2000 that a new client and server were released that were in lockstep from a codebase perspective.
