win2000Patch for buffer overflow

Downloaded the patch,fine & at installation half way started giving Error message that Winlog has made error pc will shut down & start program again. What happened was pc shut down,restarted by itslef,gave the error message,
;same went on & on. Called service people who could do nothing except loaded another OS on local discD.The c disc had 1in2000Professional.My data/programs on that cannot be recovered. Any one with similiar experience or can advice?
