Win2000Adv Server logon problem after dcpromo

I ran dcpromo on a Windows 2000 Advanced server to demote it. Everything seemed to go well making it a member server, there were no errors.

Now, when I try to log into the machine, it takes 20-30 minutes to get to the desktop. The applying computer settings flashes by, then the machine sits with a blue background and nothing else. This even happens with the local administrator account, so I've ruled out DNS or AD problems. There are no errors or warnings logged in the event logs. Interesting, there aren't any system log entries for the various services starting up when the machine is rebooted either.

I tried disjoining from the domain. When I did that, I could log in in a flash. As soon as I joined the domain again, back to a 20-30 minute wait to get the desktop up.

I've searched the MS KB, and Google, but I can't find anything relevant. What should I try next?

Thanks.

When you say that you "disjoin" the domain. Is that meaning that you are unpluging the network cable from the LAN card, or turfing the DNS side of this machine?

I mean that I left the domain and joined a workgroup. During that time, I can log in with a local account no problem. As soon as I join the machine to the domain, I get the long wait to logon again, even for local accounts.

Could the trusted relationship on the computer account be broken? Go back to a workgroup, try deleting the computer account from the server you're connecting to, then rejoin the domain and see if it isn't better. I read somewhere that NetDom utility can reset those behind-the-scenes passwords between the server and connecting device, but haven't tried it.
