Hi,

I got a new computer with the following hardware:

CPU: Intel p3 667 256/133FC
MB: Asus p3v4x
HD: Maxtor 53073u6
MEM: Micron 128/133x2
VGA CARD: 3DFX Voodoo3/3000

I started to setup (clean install) and when I reached to the point when it copies the files (the first file was cryptui.dll) it showed error msg. saying the file ... did not copied correctly I tried to retry the copy with no success only after I let the computer wait for a sort time and pressed the enter again it continued copying the files and so it happen with other files.

I checked the Bios and I saw that the HD did not detected properly, as the mini detection program, called Maxblast.exe , which I got from the HD manufacture, detected.
I changed the figures in the bios and the problem repeated.

Eventually I succeeded installing the w2k but the desktop shows some icons in black and some ok but the sys hangs often.
I installed the display driver and the problem stayed.

I tried to install from a different CD CD-ROM HD WinNT had trouble detecting the HD.
Installing win98 was easy and with no troubles at all.

I am frustrated and do not know what to do.
I am working on this for <red>2 weeks</red> and the same problem occurred each time I reinstalled (clean) the w2k.
<red>I suspect that the MB and the HD are the basic of this problem but i cannot fine any solution at the manufactures support web site.</red>

Help me Please!!!
You know what to do, get rid of w2k!! I was using w2k for about a week, testing it to see if it could replace winNT at my company. My tests where basic, they include routine tasks that the users would perform on a daily basis. I also wrote my thesis up on word 2k under w2k. It blow the 1.5mb document up to a 40 mb document, I don't know what happened there!

I would seriously scrap win2k in favor of a proven O/S like winNT, linux, or even win98.

>I tried to install from a different CD CD-ROM HD WinNT had trouble detecting the HD.
>Installing win98 was easy and with no troubles at all.

Like you said in your post win98 works fine, so that means that your hardware works properly. As far as NT goes, it is not as easy to setup as 98. You require the proper drivers to set it up. Remember too, that win2k is based on the NT kernal, it's also known as NT 5. So this may be the problem with win 2k.

Hope this helps...

fenris
fenris@hotmail.com

Get rid of that MAX Blast whatever. Sounds like a BIOS translation program for machines that can't support your 30 GIG drive. If your mobo can't see 30 GIG look for a BIOS update or contact the dealer you purchased it from. It's not old and should have no prob with 30. I don't know what UDMA/66 chipset the Motherboard uses, but that is probably where you are having your troubles with 2k and NT. You may need to use boot floppies for 2k (as with NT) and install a driver from the manufacturer of the disk controller.

By the way, I love 2k. All the security of NT with the gameplay of 98. The Voodoo3 works great with it too.
Al
atc-computing@home.com
