Hello,

I have a few questions about win2000 domain naming. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Company has a domain "example.com" - which routes to a webserver that is not joined to the company's internal domain.

We are in the process of setting up a new domain.

1. Should the domain be set to example.com? Would this cause any issues with the webserver?

2. Can local intranet traffic access the webserver locally via in their browser?

3. would this be the preferred method of setting this up, or should it be done differently - maybe using a different domain name?

kevkarma,

1. You can either use your registered example.com or you could create a domain name that is unrelated.
A. Are you using public IP addresses on your lan or are you using private IP addresses? If you are using private you will have a router the is using either NAT or SNAT, if this is the case all you do is setup a NAT rule that points port 80 to the IP address of the Webserver.

B. If your company is using a public pool of IP address's you just want to make sure that your DNS server has a Host (A) record entry for you webserver.

2. The intranet will be able to access the webserver. However they would not be able to access the server by typing because this does not indicate the webservers name (Host). they would be able to by entering though.

3.For security reasons it is best to use non registered (private) domain names for your intranet to help safeguard against against attacks. This will only add an additional layer of security and will not prevent attacks altogether though.

Something else you may want to consider is to put the webserver in a DMZ away from your intranet to add an additional layer of security.

Hope this answers your questions.
