My PC went bananas when I switched it on this morning with several minutes worth of different and repeated error messages (each accompanied by the usual beep) about various file types being re-set back to the their original MS defaults. They all seemed to link the file type back to Edge, which I never use and would love to completely eradicate. Chrome is (was) set as the default.

Typical error message of many:

Before posting here, I used Google and found my circumstances are just as described in this article in the Inquirer.

The PC has calmed down now, but I'm now not sure which program is going open and load, say, a PDF.

Fingers crossed, the tangled links between file type and applications will get sorted soon.

Rhetorical aside: Why do MS do this? <sigh>

Update: It seems to be triggered by WinZip? I have a licensed copy of Ver 17.5 - the latest I think, as no updates are available. Very odd.

I took matters into my own hands as I was getting so annoyed with seeing (and hearing) "An app default was re-set". Not necessarily the best frame of mind to approach the problem but there we are.

There was a WinZip upgrade to WinZip 20, which I've now done and that seems to improved things. No madness when WinZip loads.

And I took control of the files MicrosoftEdge.exe and MicrosoftEdgeC.exe and renamed them MicrosoftEdgeOLD.exe MicrosoftEdgeCPOLD.exe. That was a suggestion from http://superuser.com/ - hope no damage is done as a result.

So far so good.

Woody says it was a Windows Update that changed your defaults.
That was what my link in the initial post referred to.

I removed the offending up update - or thought I had - but the issue continued. It could have been re-installed without me knowing.

Aha!! Here we are! Windows 10 - An app default was reset (older WinZip versions)

Winzip is now version 20. The reason you don't see any newer updates is because after a year, you have to buy the updates. :-(

Bizarre though how suddenly a Win10 update causes havoc which is resolved by paying money to WinZip/Corel. Wonder if there are any kick backs.....

Apparently some apps set file preferences by modifying a registry key that they shouldn't really touch. This has been fine up to now but a recent Windows update curtails this behaviour, which causes all these pop-ups for affected apps. The popular image viewer Irfanview is one of them.

It's up to the 3rd-party developers to fix their apps to set file associations in the proper way. It would be nice to think that Microsoft gave them some warning of this, but who knows.
