I've never seen this behaviour. I wouldn't have upgraded (backup and clean install is better going forward). Suggest trying a repair reinstall (boot from XP install CD, choose new install - then when it finds existing install it will offer to repair (hit R). Do this - it basically repeats install. If still no good, can you put dive in another machine to back up your data? (Because I'd suggest a clean install).

PS. Did you get any warning/error messages during the upgrade process?
