I have to produce an in depth report comparing Win XP/Win2k Server and Novell Netware 6.

Please can anyone recommend any sites to help the research.

What is it you want to compare between the two? You can read for days on each one...

Thanks for those, Chris. Whilst I had previously checked out the first, I had missed the second.

From my research so far Microsoft seems to be the most prolific source of information. Ideally I'd like to find a site that provides an independent and detailed comparison. Whilst I'm happy to make a case for Win2k and/or XP, I do also need to give NW credit for it's +'s ... something Ms naturally rather skims over. <g>

Primarily I'm looking to cover User management,
Software instalation and management, Security and Network management, plus anything else I think/decide might be useful ... and hoping to crib a few sites that might reduce the days to hours. <g>

With thanks again,

Maureen

Thanks for those, salserocito. I'll check them out.

Hope you and sylunt1 wont mind though if I keep this question open a little longer ... ever the idle optimist, I live in hope that someone has come across an "has everything I need" site! <g>

Thanks as always.

LRH,

You can start by asking this question at the Novell support forums here: Somebody may be able to point you to some non-biased studies.

As a professional consultant who has built many enterprise NetWare and NT/2000 networks, I'll just say that if reliability, scalability, performance, and security are your goals, nothing from MS can touch NetWare.

Novell has a cool site called Obviously, it's a biased site; however, over the years, I have never seen Novell lie about their products--they don't need to (unlike some other company).

As for user management, Novell's ConsoleOne and MMC from MS are similiar; I prefer ConsoleOne, though, because it's written in Java and is cross platform, meaning I can run it from my Linux box.

Software management and installation is where Novell has a very compelling suite of products, ZENworks ( Without going into too many details, I believe I remember that ZEN for Desktops has over a 300% ROI that is realized within 6 months (I think I read a Gartner report to that effect). Microsoft's desktop management products pale in comparison to ZEN. In addition to ZEN for Desktops, Novell also has a ZEN product for servers. This product performs the functions of the former ManageWise product as well as Tiered Electronic Distribution of software. This means that I can create an NDS object for software for either a NetWare or a NT/2000 server (ie a service pack) and distribute it to one server or tens of thousands of servers on a timetable that I specify. Pretty compelling stuff, considering that the average MS network admin spends half his/her day applying service packs.

Sorry for the long post; hope it helps

Certified in absolutely nothing :)

Hi Bill

Many thanks for your very helpful reply ... your time and trouble much appreciated. Thought I'd put in my thanks before I chase up all your links ...I could be browsing for a while! <g>

Hi Mark

My thanks to you too. I've just had a quick look at your link ... seems like there's plenty to keep me occupied there too! <g>

I reckon it's time I started sifting through what I've found and attempting to put some conclusions on paper!

I don't think there's anything in the rules to say I can't give stars all round ... so here goes, with my thanks to you all.
