G'day, I have been getting such outstanding support from you guys, I find myself asking for help in support of my current issues with Win Xp won't load.

the following file is corrupt or missing:

Windows\system32\config\system

Is there a site or means to download that file and copy it onto my computer that has the problem? I do not have the CD'd for Win XP. Thank you

There is normally, by default, a 'hidden' dir with a backup of files in xp.

You can try pressing "F8" upon boot & select "last known good config".

If that does not produce the desired result

This might provide assistance

G'day, my problem is the computer won't boot, and the error says that file is corrupt or missing, so it won't start at all, I thought there might be a site I could donload that one file and copy it to my harddrive

My Windows drive is NTFS.
When I turned my Computer on, I saw the message "The file system32\config\SYSTEM is corruped or missing".

I did the following and solved the problem:

I restarted my PC from WinXP CDROM and went to the Recovery Console and typed these sentences to restore the file SYSTEM:

CD system32\config
REN system system.old
COPY ..\..\repair\system
EXIT

then, when I restarted my PC, I saw another message that said the file c_1256.nls was missing or corrupted.

I went to the Recovery Console again and restored the file from WINXP CDROM as following:

CD system32
COPY H:\I386\c_1256.nl_
EXIT

where "H:\" is my CD Drive.

after restarting, another message apeared that said c_720.nls was missing and I did above again for this file and after restarting I got my Windows healthy again!

G'day, sadly, I do not have the Win XP CD, I do have a set of Recovery CD's.

The System file that is corrupt is a copy of part of your Registry (a Hive in fact). As previously pointed out an old version can be found in the C/Windows/Repair folder, a later version can be found in the Snapshot folder of a RP folder (restore point folder) of the System Volume Information folder.

This is explained better by referring to this article.

An easy to follow recovery console description when unable to start computer due to corrupt registry.

This is a layman's version of Q307545 in simple language.

Silly problem but annoying. When trying to choose which screensaver to run such as ( flying objects ) I only get a picture of desktop. On the other hand, if I choose ( snowflakes ) , picture will load but will not move it stays in a freeze. Hope someone can help. Thanks so much [sunshine]

TO inney

G'day, I did as instructed in that article, that is when I get the error message that windows\system\config\system is corrupt. I do not have the WIN XP Home Version Install CD, I can get to Recovery Console, and I have 6 Recoveery CD's that were made by my son before he gave me this computer. My biggest fear, I am a disabled CombatVeteran, and I am involved in several Support Groups of Veteran's Suffering as I am from PTSD and DEpression, all that data and infor mation is on that computer, names, addresses, phone numbers etc., including letters, and hundreds of saved e-mails in my e-mail program. Will running the Recovery in the basic mode, the one that does not completely destroy all data, do you or anyone know what information will be lost? Their is a warning, that if I run the other option, all will be lost. I have several years of important data, and God only knows why I did not back it up, I am physically sick over this problem. Will I lose all the vital information, or is there a way to download the corrupted system file from some site, and copy it to my computer, can you or someone please help me. My injuries prevent me from working, and I am on a fixed Disability Income, and any Veteraan probably know that amount does not go far, and I cannot afford to buy the Win XP Home Edition Program. Sorry for getting carried away, I don't know what to do. I am able to copy files from the CDROM, or the Floppy Disc Drive tothe C drive through the Recovery Console, that is why I thought of some how downloading the corrupted file from a site, put it either on a Disk or CD from my friends computer, and copy it onto my computer, hoping that will allow me to boot my computer normally. I would really like to know what will be lost if I run the Recovery Program, will all the years of Photo's I have from family to fellow Combat Veteran friends bbe lost? Will important copies of letters I have sent be lost, will all my saved e-mail be lost? Please help, someone.

Codyscott4,

Well one vet to another(RVN Vet), after checking, this is a file that is updated upon each boot, I suspect by the date/modified tag.

That would indicate that it is one of those files that is specific to each individual system. Bottomline if my conjecture is correct, a copy from another system will do you no good. It will have to be generated by your system.

Answer to your query about what you will lose using the basic mode: you will lose your settings files, but documents should remain intact.

Suggestion: Can you move this drive to another PC as a slave(data) drive & copy the information you need before trying any repair? This would help you preserve this data.

G'day,

I don't know how to begin to thank everyone that has assisted me, in the end though, I ended up doing a System Recovery.... to my surprise, it only wiped out shortcuts to my programs, which I can easily reinstall, NO data, photo's, documents were lost, God Bless you all from the bottom of this Veteran's heart.
