i got fed up with reinstalling xp from disk and adding all sp and patches etc

so, i copied boot dive (c) and restored to a bigger 300gb drive which has a 100 gb active partition for os and 200gb partition for data

new drive seems to boot ok ...
mother board splash screen
win xp pro splash screen with black background
1 second black screen
win xp pro splash screen with black background
(all good same as normal boot so far ... would expect blue screen for logon next ...)
blue screen with small win xp logo but nowhere to log or click continue etc
pc just hangs there and have to power off

tried boot drive copy from dos and a copy from 'snapshot drive' (
same results ...

can access new drive from old c drive and see d drive os data and data partition

tried fixmbr etc ...

i feel that i am missing something simple here guys ...

any suggestions please ... ?

I presume you meant
Assuming the clone worked and personally I would use Acronis Trueimage to clone a drive, simply because I prefer it. Is the clone being booted in the same or another machine?

I have found the following techniques work for me.

Boot to safe mode. If that works then there is a good chance a normal boot will work.

If moving to new hardware and XP gets hung up on installing new drivers then going via a virtual PC can work. So I install the clone on a virtual machine, let that sort itself out and then clone that back to a real drive.

hi stduc, thanks for response ...

you have the correct url and i should have checked it before posting ... already paid $$ so will wait for a while before trying something else unless necessary ...

tried booting into safe mode and end up at the same light blue screen with xp logo and nothing else ...

same pc but new(ish) 300gb western digital hdd

previously had xp on it when i bought it first a few weeks ago but i had to thrash it when getting crashes ...

... turns out that it was itunes ... copied podcasts to podcast directory instead of importing them ... but thats another story ...

wonder if it could be anything to do with previous xp install on new hdd ?

I believe Acronis offer a short trial period. If that permits you to burn their bootable CD version then how about giving that a go?

Have you tried a logged boot and then inspected the log for clues?

I guess a run of chkdsk as in chkdsk drive /v/f/r where drive = c:, D: - whatever wouldn't hurt. You could run chkdsk from recover console or XP as you prefer. In recovery console you could also try a fixmbr - but I don't think the boot track is the problem.
