I am having a problem with a Win XP box locking up right after you start it up. When it comes up to the logon box (press ctrl-alt-del to start) it is locked up and will not respond to any keyboard functions. Anybody seen such a problem?
Thanks

i would say you have some driver or app loading that is causing this problem.if you cant boot in normal mode at all.. load in safe mode if you can and try systemn restore or even go to msconfig in run and see whats loading up on boot. try eliminating some of the non essential items until you find the one that may be causing your problem. this is just one of many options..its where my noob knowledge would start.

Let us know if you can't get in via Safe Mode, there are other options available to you involving the Recovery Console or repairing Windows.

I appear to be having a similar issue with this machine. I start the machine up as per normal, and it "LOCKS UP" at the screen just prior to the Windows Desktop showing up. Once I press CTRL-ALT-DEL, the machine continues on its merry way. I'm gonna guess its got something to do with the system waiting for a CTRL-ALT-DEL to log in.

GOD I love the smell of NOS in the morning.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

Group Policy setting.

Interactive logon: Do not require CTRL+ALT+DEL

Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\Security Options

Description.
Determines whether pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL is required before a user can log on.

If this policy is enabled on a computer, a user is not required to press CTRL+ALT+DEL to log on. Not having to press CTRL+ALT+DEL leaves users susceptible to attacks that attempt to intercept the users' passwords. Requiring CTRL+ALT+DEL before users log on ensures that users are communicating by means of a trusted path when entering their passwords.

If this policy is disabled, any user is required to press CTRL+ALT+DEL before logging on to Windows (unless they are using a smart card for Windows logon).

Default:

Disabled on workstations and servers that are joined to a domain.
Enabled on stand-alone workstations.

This policy would result in a Windows Message informing you of the requirements for logon.
