When i start word 2000 it shuts down straight away or more specifically when i stop typing the first word (happens on new or after opening existing documents)!!!! if i hold a key down the program does not produce an error but when i lift off the key the program decides it needs to shut down.

I am running xp pro with all the latest service packs for both Windows and office.

All the other office programs seem to work (so far).

Microsoft suggested turning off compatibility options (already off) and they suggested a corrupted Normal.dot file but it doesn't seem to exist.

Does anybody know what is going on?

I would think it was a problem with Normal.dot also. Try searching "My Computer" for Normal.dot and delete any copies you find. if Normal.dot is not present at all, try reinstall MS Word.

Imagine if every Thursday your shoes exploded if you tied them the usual way. This happens to us all the time with computers, and nobody thinks of complaining.

normal.dot might be hidden, you could have to make the search look for hidden or system files.

I have had a similar problem in the past. My problem was caused somehow by WinFax. All my office programs worked fine until I installed it. I then uninstalled that one program, and all worked well. Makes no sense, but that is probably why it worked.
