Hi everyone,
Client is having a problem with MSN. They downloaded an update and now cannot get to any secure website like their bank to enter password, basically any site that should display an input box for user name and password, gets "Page cannot be displayed" error.
I tried all the normal fixes.. cookies, temp files etc. lowered internet security level, added all SSL options in advanced tab ...
Got error on release/renew IP. Message about device not supporting this function. Modem diagnostics cannot communicate, message about some other program using the port. There are NO programs running.
anyone else having this issue?
Thanks
Mandie

Did you try System Restore to get back to before the problem?

Is the computer's date and time correct?

Anything in Device Manager about the modem?

Can you connect to the internet at all?

HI

Having the same problem - error opening hotmail within messenger and cant login to a bank site (both https) but can connect to some other https sites)
I think I have tried everything,
System File Check,
IE 6 repair,
install Sun Java,
run adaware,
check for a virus,
tried to restore back but could not (restore error)
Running XP home and Messenger 5.0

Will try sys restore this afternoon. Date and Time are correct.Device manager has NO Problems.
Get full access to the Net except for Secure sites!
It really appears to be a recent update downloaded/installed, but I have no way of knowing what was done, since they do automatic updates and do not go to their passworded sites daily :-(
I really think it is an MSN issue conflicting with their antiquated ISP, but it is the ONLY ISP offered out there.
Does anyone know how to contact MSN tech-support? or perhaps a link to the knowledge base (if they have one)
Thanks
mandie

Check once again the system date and time, as Linney is absolutely correct that this is 90.1% of the time the problem.

Then in IE, Tools, Internet Options, Security, set it for the Internet zone as low as Custom settings will allow and try again. You can increase the settings later until it stops working.

Finally, do not ignore your firewalls, in particular the default XP firewall. Get those out of the equation until you have things working.
