Hello All.

I been having trouble getting access to the files on my multi-drive win xp pro system. The system has 4 250gb maxtor drives. The main drive is divided into 3 partitions.

1. for the os
2. for recovery
3. for data

The other drives are for storage.

It appears that all drives are functioning correctly on all drives except D:\ and all files and folder on D:\.

I had to re-install xp on this system. Before the re-install all drives were accessable normally.

I have tried changing the sharing options on this drive but things are still acting the same. (access denied on D:)

I even changed myself to the owner of these files in SAFE MODE on both my account and the administrator account. I think i'm the owner of the drive as well.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hello.

I have done even more things to try to get this D: drive to let me access it to the files stored on it.

I went to SAFE MODE changed access to full control in the security tab for both the administrator account and my user account. These are the only 2 accounts on this computer, other than the pre-included accounts.

I even went through windows explorer in SAFE MODE to the security tab for drive D: and Added my user name to that drive's owner settings.

I need all the help I can get so any advice is welcomed.

Thank you very much.

Prevent access to drives from My Computer
KEY: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
DWORD: NoViewOnDrive = 0 - None; 3 - A & B; 4 - C; 7 - A, B, & C; 0x03ffffff(67108863) - All; 8 = D.

What if you create a new Administrator user, can they get access?

Assuming you are XP Home, when you look at the Security Tab via Safe Mode, are any of the "Deny" boxes checked?

Hello.

Linney I am using win xp pro.

I have tried to set the ownership of the d: drive to myself in SAFE MODE, which I beleive I have done. I set the permision on the d: to full control.

None of them appear to be marked as DENY.

I have access to the drive. I just can't open any of the files or folders in it. I get "access denied" when I try to open a file or folder.

Thanks.

Are the folders inheriting permissions from the Security settings on D: drive?

On the Advanced tab check the box that says "Replace permission entries on all child objects........"

This resets the permission entries on child objects so that they are identical to the current parent object (D: drive). In order for the settings to take effect, you must click Apply.

Or just follow what "Bcastner" advises.

Hello everone. I did what many of you had suggested.

I did exactly as bcastner said & everything appears to be working as normal.

Thank you all.
