I've acquired a P3 800mhz system on a Gigabyte GA 06xxx M/B with a pair of Maxtor 7200 40gb HD's with twin sticks of 128mb PC133.

I'm attempting to install XP pro on it but everytime it gets to a certain point it can't copy or read certain files from the CD. I'm wondering if it could be due to bad sectors on the disks rather than the CD as I've tried 2 CD's now both reporting errors. Or could it be the CD-ROM drive causing the problems. I'm going to swap the drives around tonight to make the other one the master and try to install the OS on that.

Any other tips on what could be causing the problems. I've stripped the PC down to bare basics (it was a music PC with dedicated dsp synth boards and soundcard - gone to a better home ;-) ) and now i want to use this as a proxy/file server for home.

D/l the Maxtor error checking utility from web site and run it - grab the LLF (low level format) utility as well, in case you need it

Yep, ran all of the error checking utilities and ran a full format on fresh partitions on both disks.

I tried to install again and it stopped saying that the diskcopy.dll or filecopy.dll couldn't be copied. I swapped the CD's and still couldn't do it.

I'm wondering if the CD-rom might be broken and not able to scan a certain part of the disk.

I've tried both disks in the master position too.

Yes...definitely try a diff cdrom drive

XP pro?
hmmm - could try upgrade adisor from MS...it's huge, but it''ll tell you if it's hardware compatible (i don't see why not, except for an updating of the BIOS)

No, it gets to different points with each WinXP disk but I thought that if it was the CD that was bad then I could flip flop between them when they encountered a bad file (what are the chances of both having scratches, etc in _exactly_ the same places!) However, when it stops, I've tried swapping the CD's when it gets to a bad file but it just won't read it from there.

The install CD is an image of the same original disk.

Are the c.ds full installation c.ds some puters only come with a re-install disc

No, it gets to different points with each WinXP.... " - ram issue, try diff. ram

Acknack - Not had a chance to try a new CDROM yet, all the ones i've got lying around are dead and in full time service as doorstops, coasters, etc... Will have to bite it and buy a fresh one I suppose.

Tomaso11 - It was a custom built PC originally with 98se. I'm now trying to install my full XP Pro on it.

Lemon13 - It's got 2 sticks, I'm going to pull them individually and see what happens. I'm also going to run memtest on them both just to be sure.

I'll keep you updated as i discover/eliminate things

Thanks

OK, just to feed back, I've solved the problem.

The 2 HD's were setup as Master and Slave on IDE1 with the CDROM as Master on IDE2. I noticed that when it stopped and couldn't read the file, when i hit browse the 2 HD's were showing but no CD drive. For some reason Windows was losing the CD when it was setting up devices.

I moved the CD to Slave on IDE 1 and the 2nd HD to Master on IDE2 and XP loaded first time.

This is a far more preferable configuration anyway as disk access should be more efficient.

Still don't quite know why it wasn't working as all drives were jumpered correctly but at least it is now. thanks all for your suggestions.
