Hello:

I want to network my new DEll PC, which has Windows XP Home, to a 4 year old Gateway Solo notebook computer, which has Windows XP Prof. I ran the network wizard on both computers. The notebook recognizes the PC however the Dell PC comes up with the following when I check "View workgroup computers":

""network" is not available. You might not have permission
to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

the list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available"

To my knowledge, there are no access permissions set as this is a brand new, out of the box PC. Can anyone offer me any advice? I have files on the old notebook that I would like to burn on my pc's cd burner. Thanks in advance for any help.

I have exactly same problem.

rjizzo, where you able to find the solution to this ? Does anybody else have a solution for this ?

Hey you have to create the identical "user" on both machines.. so log in and create a user other than administrator.. set the passwords the same on both. Give the new user admin rights .. and I believe that you have all of the other bases covered.. try this and post back up see if it works..

Make sure that you have enabled sharing. Go into My Computer, right click on the C: drive, click on Properties, go into sharing, create a new share called Dell C drive, and enable sharing on it. When you go into Network Neighborhood, you should be able to see the other computer now.

Well, creating the user did solve the problem 50%.

I am able to access files on XP from 98 PC. However, I cannot view 98SE from XP.

I can ping 98 from XP, but cannot ping to XP from 98.

The files are shared and have full access on both PCs.

What is it that I am missing ?

BTW... Thanks for all the help :)
