WIN XP Font Folder Locked Up

Hey, Thanks in advance, This one has got me. My win xp font folder has locked up. Photoshop takes forever to load hanging on the fonts folder, as well as just about any application that refers to the font folder. In the control panel the fonts locks up and ends up not responding. And the control panel locks up. System restore would not repair it, and it will not allow me to replace the font files. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as if I have to re-install xp one more time im going to go insane. I think ill put 2000 professional back on this time.
