I have a pc with windows XP on, connect to the Internet using BT Broadband. When i use my PC i get a shocking connection- 50% ping packet loss to the internet. If a duplicate all of the settings onto a different pc the connection is fine!

Anyone any ideas as to why i have this problem on my pc and how can i fix it, are there any known issues??

Thanks in advance

Run a ping -t loopback just to see how your NIC is doing. If NIC is OK then swap with a known good cable. Let us know.

If anyone calls and says "I know a little something about computers" just tell them to reformat it.

I suspect your MTU value is too high. The only reasonable way to set MTU and RWIN is to test them. I use the following site, and the tool "DrTCP" on the site to make the changes:
Run the Tweak Test and follow the recommendations.

That tweak site says "Tweaking will not fix packet loss" :/

james1982, are both machines in the same location?

If not, then I suspect a router on the path to your own computer has ICMP disabled - so it does not respond to ICMP echo requests. ICMP is required for testing packet loss... thus having it disabled will give false readings.

P.S. I am not an expert on this topic and am prone to making mistakes.

If the end site was not doing an ICMP echo, his ping request would timeout and his loss would be 100%.

You misinterpreted the site instructions above for BroadBandReports.com. The ping packet is a single datagram, and the tweak test is based on this model in part. What it will not help with is if you lose a packet in a stream of datagrams. Some other TCP/IP issue is likely involved if this is a commmon problem.
