Hi,

first the configuration:

Windows XP computer and Win98SE computer. Both have normal NICs. Both are connected to a hub, from which the whole neetwork is connected to Nokia ADSL.

Internet works fine, both computers have the access. Adsl requires PPoE-client which assigns somekind of "virtual" ips for both of the computers. Also the adsl requires, that in the NIC of one computer has a certain ip 192.168.1.2 assigned.

If I ping with those "virtual" PPoE ips, they work fine. So somekind of connection is working.

I've installed the following protocols/services on both comps:

Tcp/ip, Client fo MS networks, File and pronter sharing, NW Link SPX/IPX

So the problem is, that the comps can't see eachother. If I look the Network neighbourhood, it only displays the computer itself. The workgroup settings are correct and so are the subnet masks etc. How can I get the network going, also I'd like to have the printer sharing on. I think it's the matter of configuring the right piece of network. I really don't understand this PpoE thing. Anyone, any clues? Thanks :D

For Microsoft networks, there is a must to solve NetBIOS resolution.
Try if it is working. When you are trying to browse the network, they will use NetBIOS resolution (W98 for sure). So, try a "net view \\<machine_name>". Then you will se if NetBIOS resolution is working.
Why do yu need IPX/SPX? Better install NetBEUI (it was designed for small networks, and it will work with NetBIOS).
IPX/SPX it is an re-engineering implementation of the well known Novell protocol (and, MS didn't know all tricks from Novell).
Anyway, my advice: fix only one protocol (TCP/IP). Test if it is working. Test name resolution for IP and also for NetBIOS. When this are working correctly, the problems will be less. Gia Betiu

Install NETBeui on each of the PC's... it'll see eachother after that!

Otherwise, make sure that you are using a correctly configured LMHOSTS files on each of the PC's.

Good Luck!
