When I open windows explorer (running Win2000) I sometimes recive an error message stating: explorer.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows. You will need to restart the program. Am error log is being created.
The error log states:

Application exception occurred:
App: explorer.exe (pid=1088)
When: 10/4/2002 @ 09:07:32.968
Exception number: c0000005 (access violation)

Does anyone have any ideas of what could be the problem?

Various things cause this. Possibilities include a runaway process, installing a new driver or less likely a virus. What version of Internet Explorer are you running? What service pack is installed?

I am running sp3 and ie6. I have mcafee up to date and no viruses. IE is not the problem win explorer is. Is there a way to find the runaway process. This has been a problem since the computer was built. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Anyway, I found a workaround that at least has stopped explorer from crashing without significant changes to functionality:
Drmaggie said in another form.
One can modify the definition of the "Windows Explorer" shortcut under Start->Programs->Accessories by changing the command line in the shortcut's Target: field.

Default is
%systemroot%\explorer.exe"

After I changed this to
%systemroot%\explorer.exe /select,c:\
Windows Explorer starts up with My Computer already expanded - and the problem I had before is gone!
