After installing a downloaded program for recovering MSWord passwords I re-booted my Win98 pc. It After logging in it comes up with an error:

Explorer
This program has performed an illegal operation
 and will be shut down.

If the problem persists, contact the program
 vendor.

When I clear the message I am left with just a background and the mouse pointer, which I can still move. Starting in safe mode makes no difference. Is there a way of fixing this without having to do a Windows re-install?

After you got the message the first time, on what occasion did you get it again. Do you get the Illegal when you operate word, or do you get it when you operate your new downloaded program?

If you are sure it's related to the new download why not go to "Add/Remove" in the control panel and remove this new download, restart the computer, and see if you continue to get it. If you don't get it try re-downloading the program again. After trying this process several times and you are sure it's related to this new download, trash the download and try to find another one.

Do you see the message (at the lower left of the IE window) stating that IE can't find server or DNS error?

If so, you may need to rename your winsock.dll and/or your Wsock32.dll and/or your Wsock32.vxd and re-extract it. Some programs and devices, when installed, replace this file with a different build, or version.

There are specific builds for each OS release listed on the microsoft site.

One of the most common causes of explorer posting Illegal operations is the downloaded programme was not actually installed correctly. It is not enough to close open applications but all running (startup files) must be shut down before installation commences. Qikfix from works exceptionally or you can close these programmes one at a time with the Ctrl+Alt+delete keys. Click "end task" on all running programmes except for explorer. Now install your programme and then reboot. You may encounter a problem when installing for the second time if certain old registry entries now embedded in the system are not removed. The only way you can really know which setting to remove is by contacting the software programmer and ask. That not being possible, the safest bet is to search the registry for all the programmes entries after you have uninstalled it and delete the remaining uninstalled files from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software. (Backup the registry first)
If the rules of proper installation are followed and errors or malfunction of a particular programme is still present when using it, then it is likely the downloaded programme is at fault.

Thanks for all your input. As the error occurred on startup and I couldn't get anything to happen afterwards I ended up re-installing windows, this did the trick. Thanks anyway.
