having trouble closing down computer will go as far as the computer is now closing down but hangs on this screen if I hit ctrl alt del it highlights explorer is still open anyone help

are you running norton av 2002, had a problem with it scanning a drive on shutdown.

Make sure you've run the windows update... There's a shutdown patch that fixes problems with too many mapped drives...

Are you on a Novell NetWare network? For some reason various workstations (I've seen Compaqs and some cheaper HPs) do not like SHUTDOWN (RESTART is okay). I've made a desktop icon with this command, but you can also shut down running this from Start/Run:

c:\windows\rundll.exe user,exitwindows
