I have an old PC running Windows 98se with-

Intel AL440LX mother board
PII 300
160mb Ram
2 X IDE HDD's
1 X IDE CDROM
PCI Matrox Mystique 4mb
Rockwell intl 56k modem
300w supply

I have recently bought an AGP Diamond Viper V770u 32mb video card to replace my old PCI card. The BIOS recognizes the APG card and the card works up to the OS loader at witch point the PC reports "Operating system not found".

If I stick my old PCI card back in the PC boots up again OK.

I currently have both cards installed although only the PCI card is recognized

Any ideas??

Many Thanks

Peter.

In the bios do you have an option to select AGP instead of PCI? "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing....." [idea]

Cheers for the advice.

I have checked the BIOS, there are no options for disabling the PCI card in there.

I first changed the display to “VGA standard” in windows. Shut down, swapped cards & rebooted and checked the BIOS settings.

I then rebooted again got the same error message and swapped back to the Matrox PCI card.

I can live with the old card if no one has any brainwaves.

Thanks.

Pete.

Threads from other searches suggest config mode jumpers applied...altho the manual wasn't really clear on this...but it looks like others have gotten AGP cards to work. (groups.google.com search)
The manual does show an AGP slot...probably 2X, but might help.
Looks like palette snoop is the only config option in video BIOS controls...

Yes, I could only find a "palette snoop" option. It seems the best advice is to leave this as "disabled" as it is primarily for legacy software / hardware.

I think I will re read the manual again and give up (the demands of a young baby are not conducive to spending hours ripping apart my PC).

Thank you again for spending time on this.

Pete.

Another thing you can do is reset the bios,
1, unplug power cord from the power supply
2, remove the both pci and agp video card
3, take the coin battery out , and still a screw driver to both terminal of the battery on mother board.
4, Reinstall the agp card.
5, Reboot computer.
6. If you see the memory count this is not in bios.
7. After memory count check the summary to see the AGP port at the right side upper
portion of screen.
8. Another thing check on bios is make sure the IRQ for reserver for the VGA card is
not use by other component.
I hope this helps.

Try installing the software for the AGP card first, then shut down and swap cards. If you have a utility cd for your mobo you might need to install some AGP drivers from that as well.

I suspect my mother board is faulty as after resetting the bios the LPT1 port is not recognised and the HDDs do not auto detect with the APG card installed but all is fine with the PCI card.

I am now back to where I started and have now officially given up on this project.

Thank you all for your help in this matter,

Pete.

Don't give up man,

This might be the problem:

New agp cards also require a new AGP port. Looking at your pc specs it is almost certain that you have an old version of AGP ( V 1.0). The new standard is AGP V 2.0. It delivers a higher voltage to the graphics card.

The only solution for you would be to buy a new motherboard.

Greetings,

Pascal.

I suspect you are right. This will have to wait for my PC's long over due next upgrade.

Cheers

Pete

You might want to try checking the BIOS setup and set Plug and Play to enabled. Also, you could try clearing the ECSD and reboot.

For the record:
LX440 boards will run some AGP 2.0 cards...and the NEWest AGP spec is 8X...coming out on some mobos now and may be fitted with the new video cards meeting this standard.
