Weird one here...

When starting Win 98SE after the computer has been off for several hours, the computer detects a new monitor and asks me to install drivers. However, the correct drivers are installed.

I hit cancel and reboot the computer. When I reboot the computer the computer no longer detects the new monitor and it works perfectly... the Nvidia 12.90 are there and everything is fine.

This problem only occurs if the computer is shut down for an extended period of time.

Any ideas?

Win98 SE
Rivia TNT Series 2
Nvidia 12.90 drivers.

If your date and time are off when you reboot the check your bios battery,if thats not it the your power supply may be going bad

usually an indication of the graphics card drivers NOT being loaded properly.
I notice you are using old drivers so an update to the latest Nvidia Detonator drivers will also give you a speed boost and may well cure your problem.
Cmos battery ? possible
PSU very unlikely, just my opinion. Martin Please let members know if there advice has helped any.

Regarding the BIOS battery, everying else works fine (like the time and date). Is there a way of testing the bios battery.

One thing I should add: On a cold boot, when the computer asked for new drivers after detecting the monitor, I hit 'cancel'. The computer then freezes up.

I reboot at that point and everything is fine.

Any advice?

As I said try latest Detonators!
