i have another PC with windows 98SE as an OS. i can ping the server which is windowds 2000. but when i try to browse the server, i get a password message... i tried double checking everything, but still it does'nt work...

What do you mean by browse the server? Are you trying to access a share using windows explorer or is there a web server running on the Win2K box and you're trying to access a web page?

If you're just trying to access a folder on the Win2K box, you need to enter a UID & PWD for a user that has remote logon and folder access privileges on that box.

i'm trying to access a shared folder in the server which i can't in my windows 98SE pc. but i can ping the server. i checked the workgroup and everything... but still it asks for a password whenever i'm trying to access the shared file in server. by the way, i checked the privileges...

Isn't is supposed to ask for the pwd? What happens if you enter a valid uid & pwd?

before you login, does win98 check if your login is in the server? i checked his login and password in user manager in win 2000. isn't it if your login and password is in the server, it won't ask for that again when you browse the shared file of the server? by the way, the shared file has no restriction, no security and anyone can access it...
